Many older homes simply don't have enough socket outlets for modern living. Over time, extension leads, adaptors and surface-mounted trunking often become the quick solution, but they can leave rooms looking cluttered and create unnecessary inconvenience.
Recently, I completed an additional socket installation in Morley for a customer who was having her hallway, staircase and landing replastered. What began as a simple request to convert an existing single socket into a twin socket developed into a much more practical long-term solution that improved both safety and appearance throughout the property.
Looking Beyond the Original Request

By extending the existing circuit and installing additional twin sockets in both the lobby and lounge, we could eliminate the need for the surface-mounted trunking, reduce reliance on adaptors and provide power points exactly where they were needed.
This meant the customer would end up with a safer, tidier and more convenient installation while the walls were already being prepared for decoration.
Additional Socket Installation in Morley
The first stage involved carefully chasing out the walls and extending the existing socket circuit to supply the new twin socket outlets.
To minimise disruption, I used specialist equipment including a cable channeller or SDS chisel where appropriate, together with an industrial vacuum designed specifically for dust extraction during construction work.
While no wall chasing method is completely dust free, using the correct equipment significantly reduces airborne dust and helps keep the customer's home as clean as possible throughout the work.
Once the new cables had been installed, all connections were made and the installation was tested before being prepared for the plastering stage.
Keeping the Sockets Safe and Usable During Plastering
Because the property remained occupied throughout the project, I fitted finger guards to the new socket positions before re-energising the circuit.
Finger guards are protective frames that temporarily fit in place of the socket faceplate. They prevent accidental contact with live parts while still allowing the sockets to remain usable.
They also provide a clean edge for the plasterer to work up to, helping achieve a neat finish around the socket positions without covering the openings with plaster.
This approach allowed the customer to continue using the electrical installation safely while waiting for the plastering work to be completed.
Working Alongside Other Trades

On this project, the electrical first fix was completed before the plasterer attended. Once the plastering work had been finished and the walls had been allowed sufficient time to dry, I returned to carry out the final fix installation.

Once identified, these issues were rectified and the circuit was retested to confirm it was operating safely.

Final Fix and Completion
Once the plastering work had been completed and the walls were fully dry, I returned to remove the finger guards and fit the socket faceplates.
The finished installation now provides the customer with additional twin socket outlets exactly where they are needed, eliminating the reliance on adaptors and removing the unsightly surface-mounted trunking that was previously supplying the television.
The result is a cleaner, more practical and safer electrical installation that blends seamlessly into the newly decorated rooms.
