1) Outside Light Installation in Gildersome – It's More Than Just Fitting a Light

Outside lighting is one of the most popular jobs I'm asked to do, and it's easy to see why.

A well-positioned outside light not only makes your home safer and more secure, but it can completely transform the appearance of your property after dark.
Recently, I've completed several outside light installations in Gildersome. Although each customer chose modern up-and-down lights, every installation was different because every property and every customer had different requirements.

One of the first questions I always ask is:

"How would you like your lights to work?"

Some customers want the lights to switch on automatically when someone approaches their front door.

Others prefer to control them from a switch inside the house.

Some simply want to improve the appearance of their home during the evenings.

2) Every Home Is Different

One customer was having their home completely rewired.

This gave us the perfect opportunity to install two stainless steel up-and-down lights either side of the front door.

Because the walls were due to be replastered, I was able to hide all of the wiring within the walls, leaving no visible cables once the decorating had been completed.

The customer chose lights with an integrated motion sensor, so they automatically switch on when someone approaches the front door after dark before turning themselves off a short time later.

The finished result not only improved security but also created a warm and welcoming entrance.

Another customer wanted a pair of matching stainless steel up-and-down lights but preferred to switch them on and off manually.

The existing outside light was located within an archway, so I carefully extended the wiring through the wall to feed the two new lights.

Rather than simply clipping cables across the brickwork, I took the time to hide the wiring wherever possible to achieve a much neater finish.

3) Why I Take the Time to Hide the Cables

One thing I always think about when installing outside lights is what the finished job will look like.

Of course, the lights need to work properly and be electrically safe, but outside lighting is also about improving the appearance of your home.

On one recent installation, I could have simply clipped the cable neatly across the face of the brickwork.

It would have worked perfectly well.

It would also have been much quicker.

But that's not how I like to work.

Instead, I carefully planned the cable route, drilled through the walls where possible and used the mortar joints to hide the wiring before carefully making good afterwards.

It probably added around an hour to the installation.

But what's an extra hour when the installation could still be there in twenty or even thirty years?

The light fitting itself might one day be replaced, but if the cable has been hidden properly from the beginning, the front of your home will continue to look neat for many years to come.

For me, it's those little details that make the difference between a job that's simply finished and one that's finished properly.

4) Replacing Tired Old Outside Lights

One of my favourite transformations involved replacing an old coach lantern.

Over the years, extra wiring, surface clips and a separate PIR sensor had been added, leaving the front of the property looking untidy.

Rather than simply fitting another light, I removed all of the unnecessary wiring before installing a modern black up-and-down light with an integrated motion sensor.

I then re-routed the existing cable into the mortar joints before carefully making good the brickwork.

The result was a much cleaner, more modern finish that completely changed the appearance of the entrance.

Sometimes it's the small details that make the biggest difference.

5) Standing Behind My Work

No matter how carefully a job is planned, occasionally something unexpected happens.

On one installation, the customer phoned me on a Friday evening and said:

"When I switched the lights on, three of the four lights came on for a split second, then went off one by one, leaving the last light on by itself."

I'd already made plans for that evening, but after speaking with the customer we agreed it was perfectly safe to leave the lights switched off overnight and I'd call first thing on Saturday morning.

Although the customer was happy to wait, I wasn't happy that something wasn't right.

Whenever I receive a call after completing a job, I want to find the cause and put it right.

Because I'd fully tested the installation before leaving, I was confident the wiring itself was correct.

As I thought about what the customer had described, it didn't sound like a wiring fault. The way the lights were behaving pointed me more towards the GU10 lamps themselves.

The following morning I carried out further checks and confirmed the installation was still sound.

I replaced the GU10 lamps with a better-quality set and the problem disappeared.

The lights have been working perfectly ever since.

I've used the same brand of GU10 lamps on many other installations without any issues, so I believe this was simply an unfortunate faulty batch rather than a problem with the installation itself.

It was a useful reminder that even when an installation is carried out correctly, occasionally a component can still fail.

The important thing is making sure your customer isn't left with the problem.

6) Choosing the Right GU10 Lamps

Customers often spend a lot of time choosing the light fitting itself, but the GU10 lamps inside can make just as much difference.

One thing I've noticed after installing quite a few outside lights is that I nearly always recommend warm white GU10 lamps rather than cool white.

Warm white provides plenty of light to safely find your keys, walk up the driveway or answer the door, but it creates a much softer and more welcoming feel around your home.

I've also found that it tends to be kinder to the surrounding environment. In my experience, warm white lighting attracts fewer insects than cooler white lights and doesn't create as much glare for neighbouring properties.

For most homes, I think warm white offers the perfect balance between practicality, appearance and consideration for those living nearby.

I've also installed smart GU10 lamps for customers who wanted to control their outside lights from a mobile phone or programme them to switch on and off automatically while they were away from home.

Technology has moved on enormously, and there are now plenty of options depending on how you'd like your outside lighting to work.

7) What I've Learned

Every outside lighting installation teaches me something.

Customers usually spend a lot of time choosing the style of light, but I've found it's often the little details that make the biggest difference.

Planning the cable routes carefully.

Taking the extra time to hide the wiring.

Choosing quality lamps.

Making sure the lights operate exactly how the customer wants them to.

Standing behind my work if something unexpected happens.

Those details might add a little extra time to the installation, but they're the things people continue to appreciate years later.

Anyone can fit an outside light.

I believe the difference is making it look like it has always been part of the house.

8) Frequently Asked Questions

Can outside light cables be hidden?

In many cases, yes.

Every property is different, but wherever practical I always look for ways to hide the wiring using wall cavities or mortar joints to create the neatest finish possible.

Should I choose lights with a sensor?

If you want the lights to come on automatically when someone approaches your home, a motion sensor is an excellent option.

If your lighting is mainly decorative, manually switched lights may be the better choice.

Which colour light is best?

For most homes, I recommend warm white.

It provides plenty of useful light without looking harsh and creates a welcoming appearance that complements most properties.

Are smart outside lights worth it?

If you like technology, they can be.

Some smart GU10 lamps can be controlled from your phone or programmed to switch on and off automatically, making your home appear occupied even when you're away.
