I’m Glynn, the owner of GFS Electrical Services Ltd, based in Morley. I’ve worked in the electrical industry for over 32 years and have been registered as a sole trader under the name GFS Electrical Services since 2000 (the name comes from my initials – Glynn Francis Smith).
Although my parents were from Leeds, my father served in the Prince of Wales’s Own Regiment of Yorkshire, which meant I travelled as a soldier’s child. I returned to Leeds regularly for holidays, spent a year at Westerton Primary School, and finally settled here in 2003 when I bought my home in West Ardsley. I first got into electrics as a teenager, helping a local electrician with rewires. From there, I completed a BTEC National Diploma in Electrical & Electronic Engineering before moving into full-time electrical work. Throughout my career, I have continually gained new qualifications to keep my skills up to date with industry standards – something I still make a priority today.
Over the years, I’ve built up wide experience across the trade:
- Commercial & Industrial – Seven years in Sheffield working on heavy commercial and industrial sites, achieving my JIB Gold Card.
- Retail – Four years travelling nationwide upgrading Boots pharmacies.
- High-end projects – Shopping centres, Amazon warehouses, glass factories – often working 90+ hours a week, though I always made time to finish early on Fridays to enjoy the weekend.
At 28, I returned to South Leeds, where both sides of my family are from. In 2015, after the birth of my daughter Florence, I made family life my priority and began working for myself full-time. During this period, I carried out domestic work while also working as a contractor on larger projects to fill my diary. For the last three years, I’ve dedicated my work life fully to building GFS Electrical Services Ltd, combining technical expertise with the responsibility of running a professional, customer-focused business.
From 2003 until NICEIC took over ELECSA, I was registered as a Domestic Installer within ELECSA, and before that, with Stroma – all of which were official Government-approved electrical certification bodies. This gave my customers peace of mind that my work met national safety standards and was independently assessed. I specialise in fuse box upgrades and small domestic jobs – from replacing lights and adding sockets to cooker connections, repairs, and fault finding. No job is too small, and I always aim to respond quickly to keep homes running safely. I’m proud to hold the title of Qualified Supervisor with the NICEIC, and I’m fully qualified through both the NVQ apprenticeship route and City & Guilds formal education. I also achieved my BS 2391 inspection & testing qualification in 2000, which very few electricians hold. As part of my NICEIC membership, I must demonstrate continuous professional development, show that my business is set up and run to professional standards, and provide evidence of at least two certified jobs each year. This ensures that my work is not only compliant but also independently verified for quality. I’m covered by both public liability and professional indemnity insurance, and all my work is tested, certified, and backed by the NICEIC Platinum Promise.
I’m also a member of Toolboxers, a group of electricians who work together to improve the way domestic electrical businesses are run. Toolboxers focus on marketing, automation, professionalism, and customer care, helping me continually refine my service and provide the best possible experience for local customers.
As a local tradesman, I serve Morley and surrounding areas including Tingley, Gildersome, Birstall, Churwell, East Ardsley, West Ardsley, Drighlington, Dewsbury, Batley, Beeston, Middleton, Belle Isle and Stourton. I’ve built long-term relationships with many of my customers, and much of my work now comes through recommendations.
Outside of work, I’m a family man and spend most of my free time with my daughter Florence. I enjoy taking her to Devonshire Park and supporting her at local clubs around Morley, including swimming, gymnastics, and martial arts. For myself, I’m a member of Morley Leisure Centre and plan to join a five-a-side football team to keep active, stay healthy, and have a laugh. Being part of the local community and raising my daughter here keeps me motivated to deliver the best possible service to local families.
